Copper Skived Fin Heat Sink for High-Power Cooling

T2 copper skived-fin heat sinks for high-power CPU, IGBT, laser diode and liquid cold-plate bases - 400 W/mK conductivity, CNC milled flat base, tapped holes, where aluminum cannot keep junction temperature down.

  • Copper's 2x Thermal Conductivity: T2 / C11000 copper conducts ~400 W/mK, roughly double 6063 aluminum. That cuts spreading resistance in half for dense, high-flux chips.
  • Skived Integral Fins: Fins are skived from the copper base plate itself - no solder or epoxy layer - so heat moves from base to fin with zero joint resistance.
  • Milled Flat Device Base: The contact face is fly-cut flat to seal against CPU lids, IGBT packages or laser diode submounts, with thermal grease or phase-change pad.
  • Tapped Mounting Holes: Steel-insert or directly tapped copper holes bolt the sink tightly to the device without crushing the soft copper base.

What Is This Service

When junction temperature cannot be held by an aluminum sink, the answer is copper. T2 (C11000) pure copper conducts heat at roughly 400 W/mK - about twice 6063 aluminum - which cuts spreading resistance in half for dense, high-flux chips such as high-end CPUs, IGBT modules, laser diodes and RF power transistors.

These sinks are skived from a solid copper block: thin fins are cut directly from the base plate, so there is no solder, epoxy or interference layer between fin and base. The contact face is fly-cut flat and milled to seat against CPU lids, IGBT packages or laser submounts, and tapped holes (often with steel inserts) bolt the heavy copper sink down without crushing the soft base.

Copper sinks are also the standard base material for liquid cold plates - the thick, flat copper plate is the interface between device and coolant channels. We CNC mill the base, skive the fins, drill and tap mounting holes, and finish to your drawing. Samples ship within days; production runs scale under NDA.

Copper Sink Capabilities

Twice Aluminum's Conductivity

At ~400 W/mK, T2 copper spreads heat away from a small die faster than any aluminum alloy - the default choice when junction temp matters.

Skived Integral Fins

Fins are cut from the base plate itself, eliminating the bonded-interface thermal resistance that limits glued aluminum or copper sinks.

Cold-Plate Ready Base

The thick flat copper face is the standard interface for liquid cold plates - we mill it flat and drill ports for coolant manifolds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose copper over aluminum?
Copper conducts roughly twice as well as aluminum (~400 vs ~200 W/mK). For small, high-flux devices such as CPUs, laser diodes and RF transistors, this spreading advantage drops junction temperature several degrees.
Are the fins soldered to the base?
No - these are skived fins, cut directly from the solid copper block, so there is no solder or epoxy joint and no joint thermal resistance.
Can you supply liquid cold plate bases?
Yes - the same thick flat copper base is the standard interface between device and coolant channels. We mill it flat, drill ports and machine fin geometry to your coolant flow.
Does copper oxidize?
Natural copper oxidizes and tarnishes in air. We can nickel-plate the sink or supply it as-machined for closed enclosures where oxidation is not a concern.
